This series consists of General William Westmoreland's history notes along with supporting material. The notes detail Westmoreland's activities, schedules, and meetings. The supporting materials include correspondence such as memorandums to the President and others, letters, telegrams, and cables; schedules; clippings; graphic charts; and reports, such as unit after-action reports. The series covers a wide range of topics covering the Vietnam War and including Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, and Thailand; military administration and policy; military combat, mobilization, intelligence, and missions; special operations; and low-intensity conflicts. During this time, Westmoreland served as Deputy Commander, United States Military Assistance Command, Vietnam (USMACV); Commander (COMUSMACV); and then Chief of Staff, U.S. Army. Westmoreland corresponded with Lyndon B. Johnson, Maxwell D. Taylor, Ellsworth Bunker, Robert McNamara, Earle Wheeler, U. S. Grant Sharp, William Sullivan, Creighton Abrams, and Paul Harkins.

Maxwell Davenport Taylor (August 26, 1901 – April 19, 1987) was a senior United States Army officer and diplomat of the mid-20th century.[1] He served with distinction in World War II, most notably as commander of the 101st Airborne Division, nicknamed "The Screaming Eagles." After the war, he served as the fifth Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, having been appointed by President John F. Kennedy.
